Doing great, Excellent. So just a little bit of backstory. We met you, Lime at you, at Midwest Gaming Classic here in Milwaukee. back in it was March, I think, right, It's like at the end of March And my son was playing your game And it was funny. You were actually really impressed with how well he was able to navigate through the puzzles. And he's only like well, he's not, he's nine or eight, but he looks like he's six. So I think maybe you're you were a little bit more impressed than maybe you should have been. But you know, let's, let's talk about you a little bit. You're a game developer here from the Milwaukee area, correct? That's right? Yep, And is yeah, go ahead, Go ahead, Beat it out, Yeah.

Yeah, so I've been in the Wisconsin area for all my life, but I went to school up at UW-Stout.

I'm assuming that's just kind of like pre-sale, like a starter. That's previous things that I've made, oh, okay. Okay, got Lobos Jr to play it, though. That was cool.

Did you really? Yeah, okay, so what? what is your game that you're working on right now? It's called You Have No Time, right?

Speaker 3: 2:41

That's right. So You Have No Time. It's a puzzle game. But the kind of twist on puzzle games is that it's fast, it's fast-paced, you have no time to get your puzzle done. You have to figure it out. Figure it out fast And you, so it's a. It's a combination of testing your wits and testing your fingers And it one of the design principles that I have for the game is trying to make the players feel creative. So most puzzles have multiple solutions in them And even if you, you know, don't get the full solution like you don't get all three of the stars you can still go on the next level. You can figure it out later. You know, i'm trying not to punish people, i'm trying to, you know, let them enjoy the game. And it's different. So I guess, for the aesthetic it's pirate themed And there's like muskets and cannons and bombs and dynamite.

So you're kind of like Johnny Depp going swinging around trying to save his, his buddies while the the colonials are trying to gun them down, or like what's the deal?

So the original idea that I got for this was I want to make a game based on quick silver from days of future past where he's saving all those guys from the fire, right? Oh okay, the burning building, right. So that was, that was the premise. And then the pirates just came about, cause I was like, well, we need kind of slow bullets, sure, so muskets. So then everything, just kind of you know, filled out from there.

So were you like inspired by, like super hot or anything like that, when it came down to slow moving time?

Speaker 5: 4:23

Yeah, just to fill people in. So sorry, just to step in. A big part of the game is that time has stopped or at least slowed down considerably. So and actually I was going to say what I love. You said like the game is like. You know, the game is fast paced, which is ironic because it's in slow motion, but it is fast paced. So I do like that. But sorry, go ahead.

I wanted to point that out because I don't think you mentioned that yet. Yeah, yeah, so right. So you actually have 30 seconds total to solve each puzzle, but that 30 seconds is one second of the in game time, so it's a one to 30 ratio. So everything that happens inside of that time is kind of set up at different stages. So, like the muskets that fire off, those happen at a precise time, there's a bomb that happens exactly at the end, and then I'm working on some new mechanics that also have different parts in the time. But as for super hot, when I first came up with the idea for the game, super hot was actually inspiration In the code. right now there is super hot mode, which means that time only moves when you do.

Right, so you can move your character, and then time would move just a little bit and then you could, you could stop, right, you could think you could plan ahead, but I didn't like that as much as move as fast as you can, right, right. It's a different game.

Well, and for those of you wondering, the game is not released yet, it's not done yet. You can wish list it. I believe on Steam There's actually a demo out which I know I've played, and actually I'm pretty sure Josh and Dominic have both played as well. So why can I? I gotta ask, why pirates, yeah.

I mean, that was really just because I wanted to use muskets.

Oh, okay, so there's the reason.

Yeah, yep, yep, just cause. you know I wanted slow moving projectiles so that you would have enough time to be able to save your friends from them. And you know, originally it was the muskets would only go off once, but now they go off three times, which is kind of weird, and so maybe one day I'll have an in-game lore reason for that.

So I'm a big nut about in-game music and everything And the music for your game. was that like like something you were given, or is it like royalty free stuff?

Oh no, that is that is made by Age of Otto. He is a A-G-E, space O-F, space A-T-O. He is my German musician friend. Wow, he's making all of the music for the game and he's been amazing.

It was quite nice.

His wife is the one who made the art for the background here as well as the art for the game, and so they've been a great couple to have on the team, and so he's actually made a bunch of music that's not in the game yet One of the things that I want to do with it is allow people to choose which music they want for their level when they make their own levels, because sharing levels is going to be a big part of this game. It's going to be, you know, how a lot of people are going to really experience the game and enjoy it, so that's a big part of it.

He totally just like I was, like I was going to be. One of my questions was when we were talking sorry Dom, when we were talking at Midwest Gaming Classic, i know. Like we were talking about like having community maps being made in puzzles and everything, and it seems like you're really kind of embracing that And that was going to be my question, but you jumped the gun and you beat me to it And now I'm just going to sit here and listen.

Yeah, and then. So the other part about it is that he's made kind of distinct sound soundtracks for different areas that we have planned, so like Aztec temples, or shall I shouldn't say Aztec, i should say just kind of generic ancient temples, and then, you know, with the colonial pirate concept, right, so something that you'd expect in South America, right. And then the other part is going to be I was hoping for East Asia, and the soundtrack that he made is so good, i'll play that at my funeral.

One more question, one more question for me. So do you think you're going to expand on like, like, just like changing the theme, like eventually it'll be pirates, and then let's say you just say fuck it, space pirates, and you have, like, space dedicated levels, but still with the pirate thing going on? Definitely considered it, considered Okay.

One of the ideas that I had was this comes back to me not having a dedicated artist on the team. One of the ideas that I actually had was that it was going to be a colonial era pirate who got teleported, transported into a fantasy world where he has to fight against goblins and monsters. There'd be sky islands, but he'd be like oh, I know how to deal with this because I'm a pirate. Oh, and instead of, instead of dynamite, it'd be like fire crystals that you would shoot in the other's float.

Okay, anyway, that's all dreams, So that brings me another question Are you going to be writing like dialogue for the game for each level, and be like in the beginning would be like then good question.

I would love to. The issue I currently have is I have so many things that I want to do for making a good game that it's just it's too far down on the requirements. But one of the things I am going to do is I'm going to open up the dialogue to content creators. If you're making a map, you can add in your own dialogue. I'm going to have in parts where it's kind of like a audio sorry, a visual novel. So it'll be like there's a guy talking on the left, a guy talking on the right and you'll be able to do like little facial animations and stuff with them. So, you know you're smiling, you're saying you're whatever right. So you'll be able to make your own stories inside of the game, for your own levels And that sounds cool, that sounds awesome. Yeah, i think it's really cool, especially allowing people like if you want to do that, it's there. If you don't want to do that, then don't do it.

Yeah like there's multiple facets to the creation side of things. Like if you want to focus on telling a story, you can. If you want to focus on just making complicated puzzles, you can like. That's a really interesting way to put it.

So part of that is I actually want to let people make puzzle series where you can, where you can put a puzzle back to back with other puzzles and you can put stories in between. You can make your entire. You can make an entire game inside my game. If you wanted that, That would be ideal.

I guess how would that work? How do you plan on implementing, though, a story into it, like, obviously, like at face value it's just pirates moving cannons and people so they don't get shot, and like? how do you plan on implementing a story to kind of fit that?

So the story that I was thinking about writing is about a pirate who doesn't have time, right, like the reason he has no time is because, well, somebody in his family is sick, right. So he's been looking for the ability, the power to save them, right. And actually this is something that I realized I actually had a strong connection to. I have, you know, a two and a half year old son And I've had nightmares where he's died on me And I was thinking that this was actually something that I should try and get out, i should try and communicate this to try and work through why this is something that I actually have nightmares about. So I was thinking my pirate captain would have a son who's sick and dying and he's trying to save him by getting the power to control time. What he finds is his power to slow time, but he hears of the second piece of the you know, ancient power that he has, which allows him to reverse time Right. So that's, that's the ideal story.

My like creativity is like bursting, thinking about like some type of backstory, when he originally got his slow down time power but he realized it wasn't enough to save his son, so he's out to go find more shit. Sorry, my brain is like running now.

Yeah, So I've got a 3070 Ti, i believe, but my last one before that was a 1070. So it was a big upgrade And I think the primary reason primary reason why I decided to upgrade was because I was streaming and was making these interactive Twitch overlays. So, basically, this is the thing that Lovis Junior used is that if somebody would do something in chat, it would actually affect your own screen. So I made this very simple ink overlay So if somebody would do something, specifically like donating a certain amount of money in bits, your screen would get covered in ink, like Mario Kart. Mario Kart. Thank you, yeah, okay, so that was great. He used it for one of his cancer streams, one of his Oh. So what do you call it when you get money and you give it away?

So you mentioned that you stream a little bit yourself.

I used to I used to. Basically what I used to do, so I started off streaming. So this goes back into me having this weird fear about death.

When my. It's not that weird, i'm a better.

Everybody should have a little bit of fear. Yeah, when my son was born, my brother died of cancer, probably six months earlier than that, and so I actually had this idea that you know well, time is fleeting, life is fleeting And I want to make sure that I have I leave something for my son to know me by if, for some chance, i just walk into a car and die right. So that's why I started streaming. I was like I'll make these videos. They'll be as real as I can make them. They'll be as me as I can be, and then, if something happens, at least that's one way that he'll know me right. So it started off with just playing games. You know playing games that I like playing games on my Steam backlog, because I've got way too many, and I gained a couple of people who were like, yes, this guy's fun to watch. But what I ended up doing was I had enacted with other streamers and I was like you know what would be fun? I can make a game for you. Let's make a game in two hours on stream. And that's what we started doing, and so I have I've probably made 10 or more games with other streamers in two hours. So it was a lot of fun, super stressful.

But yeah, but that's actually a really interesting idea, like live streamed game jams.

Yeah, it's like it wasn't as good as playing games for viewers. Sure, Yeah.

But just like I could see that. I could actually see that doing really well like streaming it and then posting it as an edited video on YouTube, like I could see that doing really well, there.

Yeah, right, yeah, i'll have to try that sometime. I've got a bunch of videos that I've just never done anything with, but you know it has some. It has some good content. It's like you know there's communication chatting about you know, what do you want the game to be? Yeah, What should we do now And decision making. But then there's a lot of like I'm really stuck on this bug, So I'm just going to stare at the screen for 15 minutes. Please entertain chat for a while.

If you check out my YouTube video actually I'm not sure Somewhere in my YouTube channel there might be a 30 second video with like my first five games that I made, which has, like the first one is like just a super cheap chocobo like running across the screen, and then, like the last one is like that actually looks pretty good Really. So I learned some things while I was doing it, which has helped me make the game that I'm currently making.

Yeah, of course. So that's not where you'd have no time kind of came from Like that idea didn't spawn from that, did it?

Oh, that was originally. I want to say 2019, 2016, 2016. No, 2019, 2019. Yeah, 2019 was doing a jam online with a college buddy who was an artist and he's the one who made the pirates. So the reason why the pirates like all the characters in the game look kind of like yeah, that's pretty low effort. Yeah, he made it in like a couple of hours. So he has mentioned hey, i'd like to fix those And I'm like, yeah, as soon as I can pay you, sir, i would love for you to be back on the team.

I don't know. I kind of feel like that's part of the aesthetic of it, though, like they don't look bad.

They're not bad, he's a good artist. They're not bad, he's a good artist. but it just doesn't fit with all the other stuff that I have in there, you know.

Which doesn't fit the aesthetic, so like I had to stick with one or the other, since a lot of so like all of the level editing stuff, the ground all of the ground and all of the physical stuff that's in the game. That's not the pirates. That's all stuff that I got from like asset packs.

I bought those for like 50 bucks or something like that. And then and then that was useful. I shouldn't drink beer.

Have you thought about pushing this to a mobile platform at all?

Speaker 2: 29:29

Because I think it could.

I think there's a good amount of potential there for the mobile platform.

I've, i've, i've heard that before. I've thought about it. The issue I have with mobile is it's just a very different beast, and one of the big big things about mobile is that it's a it's a high investment platform. Yeah, so Steam, you know it's relatively low investment. You put $100 in. If your game is anywhere near good, you'll you'll get promoted at least a little bit. Even now I have probably 5,000 visits to the store page. There's nothing there right, Yeah, So like when you, when you release a demo on Steam, Steam promotes that in the free demos page. that got 60,000 impressions, which is just people seeing the title but, that 60,000 impressions in just the first three days, So that's a huge super easy way. Oh yeah, yeah, super easy way for people to see your game and know it exists. So versus mobile. If you don't put a large amount of money into marketing so that your game has players, no one will ever find it.

That's why mobile games are so filled to the brim of ads and stuff.

Well, you. That's why mobile games are advertised so heavily.

Yeah, That's why I'm messing with a bunch of yeah.

Because if nobody knows it, the game will not sell, Nobody will play it. So you need. you need numbers to make numbers.

Okay, So it would. it would be a lot easier if you were to establish yourself kind of up on Steam and then kind of get that following and then push it out onto the mobile platform where then you can monetize it somehow.

Yeah, yeah, obviously, one of the things that I've been thinking about, i've been I've been debating, is because my game is going to be heavily based on user content. I'm actually considering making it free and then selling DLC, which is going to be more things to put in your puzzles, right? So you could buy. All right. Back in 2019, they announced this huge PVE thing that they were going to do for Overwatch two. At first everyone thought it was going to be like Overwatch one, but like a little DLC or something like that. Each character had a really good voice actor and each character had like fun personality. So everyone's really hyped about that. So in 2019, they shut down all updates for the Overwatch one base game to work on PVE Couple. Years later, overwatch two comes out without PVE. We continue to play this 0.5 version of Overwatch one 1.5. 1.5, whatever, yeah, and we continue playing it. It was missing a lot of things from Overwatch one, and missing an extra player slot, of course, and then they finally dropped the bomb and said guess what, guys, we're canceling PVE. And everyone got hella pissed. There's like streamers leaving that game right now. I'm sorry.

So at least you can see that through the media, through television.

Yeah, okay, so you, you would think it's the art. Right, because, like, the art is something that I'm not good at, but no, it's not the art, because I just basically ignore it. The most frustrating thing is the thing that I'm trying to do and not doing it very well, and that would be ice sliding on ice. Okay, so in the later levels there's sliding ice, basically like Pokemon, right, you have these puzzles where you know you start sliding, you'll hit like a wall and you have to kind of like predetermine which route you want to take to be to not slide off into the water and die right? Sliding is just programmatically very confusing. Who decides how you slide? is it the character that's moving on the ice or is it the ace itself that tells things to slide? when you think about it from like a software development stance, it's like are you talking from top down or bottom up? right, like which direction is information flowing right? and if I want everything to be able to slide on ice, then ice should be the one that tells things to slide, but that's not the easiest way to do it. So, anyway, ice sucks, sucks to work with. You think it would be that hard? oh, you just tell it to move on to the next spot or whatever, and that's kind of what it does. But there's a lot of things that I have to check, like if you're holding something and you that thing runs into a thing, well now you shouldn't keep on going, you should stop, because the thing you're holding stopped right.

You get no points for killing or saving red guys. So whatever you do with those, i noticed that yeah, yeah, then it's all about time how fast you do it. And that's just like, if you, if you do all of the stuff, then it's only about how fast you do it. So, like a lot of people have found one interesting roots and different solutions that even I didn't think of, that I don't expect. And then, on top of that, a lot of people are smashing those buttons. My nephew said he's been playing a single level for hours trying to get to the top score, because he's only one point away from tying the top score right now. He says he doesn't even look at the screen anymore. He just he's putting in the buttons while he's watching something else.

There are multiple ways to use different items, like you can blow up TNT to make to break up a door, to kill an enemy, or you can drop TNT in the water and walk on it. You could move an enemy, or you could drop them in the water and use them as a platform. There's like the metal crates. you can use that to block explosions, but you can also put in the water to use as a temporary platform. But there's some weird code there, because if you put I don't know if it's still in the game, i think it might be If you put a platform in the water, a metal crate in the water, and then put a bomb on top of it, it bounces the bomb right up into the air. I'm going to try that.
